Herman Brood – The last rock'n'roll rebel of painting

Herman Brood (1946–2001) was a multi-talented Dutch artist—musician, painter, poet, and enfant terrible. Like few others, he embodied the myth of the uncompromising artist. His art—raw, direct, and full of energy—was an expression of an excessive life, caught between fame, drugs, and artistic creation.

The portrait shown here captures Brood's impetuous vitality in powerful, cubist abstraction. Sharp-edged lines, contrasting color fields, and the expressive composition reflect his restless personality and the chaos of his world.
