Since June 18, 2016, tens of thousands of people have been walking on the water 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice. For Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "The Floating Piers," 70,000 square meters of yellow fabric were laid over a modular floating dock system made of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to temporarily form a three-kilometer-long walkway across the surface of Lake Iseo, connecting the mainland with the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo.
The Floating Piers is Christo and Jeanne-Claude's first major project since they realized The Gates in 2005, and it builds on their long history of Italian projects, including Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in 1968 in Spoleto, Wrapped Monuments in 1970 in Milan, and The Wall – Wrapped Roman Wall in 1973/74 in Rome. Like all Christo and Jeanne-Claude projects, "The Floating Piers" is financed exclusively through the sale of Christo's original artworks. After the sixteen-day exhibition, all components will be dismantled and recycled.
This book presents Christo's sketches, models, documents, and designs, documenting the complete genesis of this waterborne artwork, including brand-new images from the opening. By incorporating every detail—from permitting procedures to fabric production—it documents not only Christo and Jeanne-Claude's unique creative imagination, but also the enormous technical, bureaucratic, and logistical effort that made this idea float.
